A view of Lyme Regis

The Angel Inn

“Strong manifestations” have been reported at the Angel Inn, although Coxe does not specify the nature of them. Stuart details that the apparition of an old woman, believed to be that of an elderly widow landlady named Mrs Langton, is still attached to her former premises following her death in the 1930's. She is dressed in the distinctive style of Queen Victoria, leading some witnesses to believe that they had indeed seen the former monarch. However, Mrs Langton felt it proper that she should attire herself in that way during her later life in order to lead others that they had seen the spirit of the Queen - it seems that her wry sense of humour has ironically attributed to her becoming the ghost of a ghost!

The Old Black Dog

The Old Black Dog is now a Bed and Breakfast, but was once known as The Black Hound Inn. There is an infamous local legend that the outside of this inn has been the haunt of a phantom black dog, which is said to lead to buried treasure. It is alleged to have knocked down a corner of the inn at some time in the past.

The Great House

The Great House is also known as Chatham House, and is said to be another haunt of Judge Jeffreys. It is located in Broad Street. Jeffreys has been described as wearing robes, wig and black cap (which is to be expected due to his infamous reputation as the hanging judge). Witnesses have said that he carries a bloody bone.
